Spike and Alyssa's story is so inspiring and informative! I loved reading about how she never gave up and kept looking for solutions to give him the best experiences! I highly recommend the book to anyone, horse owner and horse and animal lovers alike!

This is an inspiring story about a woman who just would not give up. The book is particularly appealing for horse lovers, but it's also a great read for anyone who wants to feel uplifted and see what happens when someone doesn't take no for an answer.
Alyssa's tale of connection between horse and human is heartwarming and hopeful. Her love and commitment to Spike demonstrates what responsible horse ownership should be. To paraphrase from Hollywood's Secretariat 'You know, you don't throw a whole life away because he's banged up a bit'. Alyssa's research into Spike's lordosis brings public understanding to this condition, and hope to those horses and their caretakers who live with it. The blog post writing style is unique and would be an easy style for younger readers to relate to. Highly recommended reading for public school libraries, animal lovers and those who cheer on the underdog.
Lovely winter read. I came across this author online and after reading some information about Spike. I really wanted to know more about Spike's life and his medical condition--Lordosis. In the book, Alyssa details her endeavors in horse rescue as well as her experiences with Spike. It was easy to read, and there were pictures of Spike throughout as well as lots of pictures at the end. Honestly, what I took away most from this book is, you really can't judge a book by it's cover (which is odd, because here we are looking at a book cover!) What I mean is, if I saw Spike being brought around to be ridden, I would have automatically assumed so many things and almost all of them would have been wrong! Hopefully reading this book will not only give you a sense of what it is to deal with some of the issues of Lordosis, but also a respect for those dealing with issues with horses--some we can obviously see, and some that are not as obvious. I hope if I come across someone with an issue, I might now just ask politely about it, so I can become more informed.

She has been sharing this story in multiple forums for several years in the hopes of helping others understand what life is like for a horse like Spike, but this book and this story fulfills a much greater purpose of promoting acceptance, encouraging people to ask questions rather than pass judgment, and showing the importance of loving what is inside someone rather than just what is outside. The story of their struggles and achievements together will appeal not only to horse enthusiasts, but all animal lovers, those who are involved in rescue, and simply anyone who understands what it's like to be different. This book is definitely a must-read that will make you feel a little better about the world and remind you that there is beauty even where you may not expect it!
Spike A True Story by Alyssa Knee is a well written, well organized and well thought out book. This book is a fast, easy read. I enjoyed it thoroughly and learned so much from Alyssa's research. Alyssa writes about her purchase of Spike and the bond that was created between them and their journey, together. She and Spike live in Australia and Spike has a congenital condition called Equine Lordosis which affects the horse's vertebrae and causes a sway-back appearance. Spike otherwise, is a normal horse enjoying his life with Alyssa! This book was good for my heart and soul as Alyssa wrote this with so much love and dedication for Spike. The time that she put into research on who Spike is, where Spike came from, his condition and how to provide the best for Spike is hard to comprehend! She also brought to my attention the online bullying she struggled with when she tried to bring awareness to Spike's condition in a more public way. She handled the situations, BEAUTIFULLY. Added features, the book has quite a few photos of Spike and information "About The Author". This book will stay in my library and I plan on giving this book as a gift to several of our horse-loving family members and friends. I now follow Spike's Facebook page and Alyssa's blog, Brunette in Breeches!
